John H. Vanderpoel Elementary, a Fine and Performing Arts Magnet School, focuses on developing student academic and study skills. The school's curriculum was developed on the principle that parents and the community must be involved to create an environment where learning is valued.

Students are offered a reading and math enrichment program as well as an accelerated reading program. Vanderpoel has partnerships with the University of Illinois (U of I) Extension Program, Urban, Illinois Math and Science Academy (IMSA) St. Xavier University, Chicago State University, and the Beverly Arts Center. School awards include a Michael Jordan Grant, Rochelle Lee (Reading for Deeper Meaning) Grant, and Academic Enhancement Fine Arts Grant.
